Encouraging start against the Champions

It was the toughest opening game for the men as they took on last season’s league and cup winners,
City of Edinburgh. Pre-season cobwebs were in evidence in the early part of the set with both sides
winning runs of points and mistakes appearing regularly. Tony Gadzhev and new boy, Sam Jones, both
scored well and when Lewis Crockart scored an ‘ace’ serve the scores were close at 14/16. Dundee
pulled level with scores from Mike Coward and Rad Marinov. A side-out point from Gadzhev and an ‘ace’
serve from Jones gave Dundee the set 25/23 for a great start to the season.
Edinburgh worked hard to find some momentum as Gadzhev, and Crockart kept Dundee in the set with
powerful attacks. The scores were close at 13/15 then Edinburgh turned up the heat and stormed away
with points in counterattack to level the game winning the set 25/18. The fire alarm then disrupted the
third set and proved costly for the home side as they lost their rhythm and lost the set 19/25 from being
tied at 16/16.
With their tails up and showing power and accuracy from the service line, Edinburgh took a very quick
16/6 lead in the fourth set. Bart Zywert and Tony Gadzhev worked hard at the net to stem the tide, but

the Dundee defence was breached too often by Edinburgh’s speed and power. The set ran away from
Dundee and the set was gone at 16/25.
