New Year win moves men clear of relegation zone
Dundee’s men’s side hauled themselves closer to the mid-table battle with a scrappy but effective performance against bottom side Glasgow Mets ll at Craigie High School last Saturday. The home side started well and opened up a 12/6 gap with control and scores from Colin Mcevoy and Boris Prodanov. Barry Millar weighed in with 2 points from his service. Mets were under pressure and gifted Dundee several points in errors for them to hold a 17/9 lead. A service error from Dundee gave Mets an opportunity and they seized it, scoring 2 quick points and forcing Lewis Crockart and Boris Brodanov into errors and they closed the gap to 3 points. Prodanov atoned and scored 3 big hits, Colin Mcevoy and Dave Bonnar both scored in quick succession and Dundee took the set 25/19.
The unpredictable Mets side then roared into a 10/6 lead, courtesy of 7 mistakes from the home side! The pattern continued as the score moved to 18/15 for Mets, with the home side gifting another 5 points through errors. Mike Coward was introduced to the game and he helped pull the score to 21/21. Coward and Prodanov hit well to take the score to set point at 24/21. Two more errors gave Mets a lifeline, but the home side made it over the line to win 25/23.
Both sides traded points in the third set with Dave Bonnar scoring 5 points early on to establish a 10/9 lead. Mistakes were still a feature of the game as both sides struggled to gain a sizeable lead. Mike Coward hit well to keep the scores close and Dundee trailed 18/21. Prodanov scored a big hit to win back the service at 19/21. Craig Goldthorpe, Prodanov and Coward then combined and scored a run of 5 points between them to win the set 25/21, with the best series of plays in the game.
This win lifts Dundee to within 4 points of Edinburgh Jets and Lenzie.
